New Interior Nomination Bodes Well For New Environmentalism

President to Name Lynn Scarlett to Number 2 Post in Interior Department

DALLAS (February 9, 2005) – President Bush intends to nominate Lynn Scarlett Deputy Director of the Department of Interior perhaps as early as today, according to officials at the White House. Scarlett is currently Assistant Interior Secretary and the author of two seminal environmental studies for the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA). She also is former president of the Reason Foundation.

“Scarlett understands the need to harness the power of the market in the cause of protecting the environment,” said NCPA Senior Fellow H. Sterling Burnett.

Scarlett authored two trailblazing environmental studies for the NCPA:

The findings of both of Scarlett’s NCPA studies are that adopting a governmental command and control approach to environmental problems does more harm than good, and that markets rather than politicians should be relied upon to find innovative, efficient solutions to those problems.

“Lynn Scarlett’s work emphasizes a common sense approach to public policy toward the environment,” said NCPA President John C. Goodman. “She brings a bold vision to environmental issues.”
